This specimen resembles a mutated turtle-like creature. Unusually, it does not appear similar to any other known species on the planet.
The creature exhibits unique inquisitive and social behavior, with a telepathic-like ability to beckon other species to particular locations.
Avoid skin-to-skin contact with this specimen; it is unknown if it is able to spread its infection when interacting. However, it appears to be relatively healthy and unharmed aside from its unusual behavior.

大型MOD「The Red Plague」に登場する、カメのような姿をした謎の生物。
テレパシーのような手段でプレイヤーに語りかけ、導くかのような行動を取る。

It communicates with the player through a telepathy-like means and behaves as though guiding them somewhere.

MODストーリーのAct 2開始後、プレイヤーの周囲に突如出現する。出現時にはPDAによる通知が入り、また本種からは「自分についてくるように」と呼びかけるメッセージが送られてくる。
不規則に漂うような軌道で遊泳し、とある重要な調査対象の場所へとプレイヤーを誘導する。調査対象へ到達した後は姿が見られなくなるため、スキャンする場合は遭遇時に忘れずに済ませておくこと。
データバンクの記述では皮膚接触を避けることを推奨されているが、実際に接触しても害はない。
After Act 2 of the MOD's story begins, it suddenly appears near the player. When it appears, the PDA issues a notification, and the creature also sends a message asking the player to follow it.
It swims along an irregular, drifting path and guides the player toward the location of an important subject of investigation. It disappears after reaching the destination, so if you intend to scan it, be sure to do so when you encounter it.
The databank recommends avoiding skin contact with the creature, but in practice, touching it causes no harm.

本種はゲーム内に登場するいかなる生物とも共通点を持たない、謎めいた生物である。しかし、その「6本足のカメ」のような姿は、Subnauticaのコンセプトアートに登場する大型生物「Giant Turtle」を想起させる。
- 後に、「Giant Turtle」は「ポッドシェル・リヴァイアサン」として実装された。両者の関連性は不明である。
- 2026年6月10日の大型アップデート「メガ・ホットフィックス」にて、以下の変更が加えられた。
- ゲーム内IDは「Hippopenomenon」であり、hippo と phenomenon を組み合わせた造語である可能性がある。hippo は現代英語では「カバ」の略称として使われる一方、語源的には「馬」を意味するが、本種との具体的な関連性は不明。

This species is a mysterious creature that shares no clear similarities with any other lifeform found in the game. However, its six-legged, turtle-like appearance is reminiscent of the large creature known as the “Giant Turtle,” which appeared in Subnautica concept art.
- The “Giant Turtle” was later implemented as the “Podshell Leviathan.” Whether there is any connection between the two is unknown.

The following changes were made in the major “Mega Hotfix” update released on June 10, 2026.
- A beacon now appears when the player approaches the creature, making it more difficult to lose track of at night (reference image).
- Its total length was also increased substantially and is now approximately 6.5 meters. Compared with its pre-update length of roughly 1 meter, it is now more than five times larger.
- Both adjustments were made in response to player feedback that the creature could easily be lost while being followed, or even go unnoticed entirely. One likely contributing factor was that many players mistook the Observer, which appears at around the same point after Act 1 of the MOD's story and wanders around the player, for the creature they were supposed to follow.
- Its in-game ID is “Hippopenomenon,” which may be a coined term combining hippo and phenomenon. In modern English, hippo is commonly used as a shortened form of “hippopotamus,” while etymologically it derives from a word meaning “horse”; however, the specific connection to this species is unknown.
