An organism of unfathomable size, dwarfing its juvenile size by several orders of magnitude. A true planetary apex predator.
1. Head:
The gargantuan leviathan’s massive cranium appears to be surrounded by its tentacles and is covered in scales thick enough that no available weaponry is able to damage them. Four tendrils tipped with photophores drape the organism’s snout, likely used to attract potential prey. Three pairs of hypersensitive eyes ensure it has no blind spots and can see in the pitch-blackness of its environment.
2. Body:
The scanned specimen’s body measures upwards of 5000 meters in length, or three kilometers. Its eel-like proportions appear to enable the leviathan to glide through the waters of the abyss with minimal energy expenditure, while allowing it to dispel the large amounts of excess heat generated by its immense bulk. Analysis indicates it is capable of using its body to surround and crush prey, but no other organism found is large enough for the leviathan to be able to do so.
3. Transparency:
The organism’s scales appear to differ from its juvenile form. Despite taking on a crystalline appearance reminiscent of diamonds, the specimen’s scales seem to be much stronger than those found on juveniles. The leviathan’s skin bears a see-through quality that allows its skeleton and guts to glow through. It likely makes use of the transparency to better camouflage itself from and confuse prey, alongside its bioluminescence and coiling hunting behavior.
4. Bioluminescence:
The gargantuan leviathan is covered in various nodes of bioluminescence, giving its underbelly the appearance similar to the night sky. It likely uses bioluminescence as camouflage from and to attract prey, with its fins in particular bearing a resemblance to the Ghost leviathans found in the edges of the Crater. Projections suggest it may also use bioluminescence to communicate with other individuals of the same species.
5. Intelligence:
The gargantuan leviathan’s brain and nervous system appear to be extremely complex, and make use of what can only be described as telepathy to enable it to function without excessive delay in reaction time. The scanned specimen’s brain activity has proven difficult to keep track of, and it remains unclear if it is capable of sapience.
6. Behavior:
As the undisputed apex predator of its ecosystem, everything is potential prey. However, the specimen observed seems to hunt almost exclusively for larger Leviathan-Class organisms, only accidentally consuming smaller creatures as it swims by. Curiously, it appears to be able to detect intelligent creatures, making an exception to pursue them regardless of size classification.
7. Roars:
The leviathan roars in regular intervals, presumably to help it locate prey or to communicate with other individuals. The shock waves generated by its roars are highly lethal and destructive in close proximity, with a blast capable of displacing even a Cyclops many dozens of meters away.
8. Hibernation:
Initial calculations would suggest the gargantuan leviathan’s immense bulk to be unsustainable in the present ecosystem, but further analysis of its bodily systems indicates the leviathan is capable of prolonged periods of stasis, enabling the organism to hibernate during unfavourable periods of time, and thus potentially live for millions of years.
9. Diet:
Scans of the gargantuan leviathan’s digestive system indicate the organism is capable of utilizing raw energy, such as nuclear or thermal, which it has shown to be able to absorb actively and passively through its jaw or skin by generating magnetic fields around itself. A large portion of what the organism absorbs is likely kept as reserves for its extremely long hibernation periods, but the majority is stored in specialized organs of yet unrevealed purpose. Further analysis required.
10. Lifecycle:
The organism’s great size allows it to carve tunnels through mountains and into the seabed of the abyss, where it likely nests and hibernates in proximity to geothermal activity. Eggs are presumably deposited close to thriving ecosystems in shallower waters, where they can sustain the much smaller, much livelier hatchlings.

「Return of the Ancients」MODに登場する、ガルガンチュア・リヴァイアサン種の成体。
ロストリバーの海底に存在する骨格化石としてのみ知られていた、太古の巨大生物である。リーパー・リヴァイアサンやゴースト・リヴァイアサンといった既知のリヴァイアサン級生物を遥かに凌駕する、全長5,000m以上に及ぶ途轍もない巨体を持つ。
全身が暗い青緑色の鱗に覆われていた幼体とは異なり、頭部から伸びる触手や胴体の鱗は、ガラスのように透き通った外観へと変化している。また、半透明の皮膚を通して、体内でオレンジ色に発光する内臓器官が透けて見える。体表には白い光を放つ無数の発光器官が並んでおり、デッドゾーンの暗黒の中でまばゆく光り輝くその長大な巨体は、もはや単なる生物を超越した神々しささえ感じさせる。

An adult Gargantuan Leviathan featured in the “Return of the Ancients” MOD.
An ancient giant organism previously known only from skeletal fossils in the Lost River. Measuring over 5,000 meters in length, its immense body dwarfs even well-known leviathan-class creatures such as the Reaper Leviathan and Ghost Leviathan.
Unlike juveniles, whose bodies are covered in dark teal scales, adults possess glass-like, translucent scales along their bodies and tentacles extending from their heads. Orange-glowing internal organs can be seen through the semi-transparent skin. Countless white bioluminescent organs line its surface, and its enormous body shines brilliantly in the darkness of the Void, lending it an almost divine presence that seems to transcend that of a mere living creature.
Awakened from an age-old slumber by the quantum explosion of the Aurora, this true apex predator of Planet 4546B emerges from the bottomless darkness of the Void.

通常、デッドゾーンに侵入したプレイヤーを執拗に追跡するゴースト・リヴァイアサンは、ガルガンチュアが出現すると一切の攻撃性を失い、ただ当てもなく彷徨うだけになってしまう。
出現したガルガンチュアは、デッドゾーンを悠然と徘徊しながら、ゴースト・リヴァイアサンをはじめとする他のリヴァイアサンを追跡し、襲いかかる。ゴースト・リヴァイアサンに対しては巨大な顎で捕らえ、丸呑みにする捕食行動を行う。一方、その他のリヴァイアサン級生物に対しては、巨大な顎で噛みつき、一撃で絶命させる。
プレイヤーもまた、ガルガンチュアの攻撃対象となる。ただし、サイクロプスやシーモスなどの乗り物に搭乗している場合と比較すると、生身の状態では攻撃を受ける可能性が非常に低いことが確認されている。
成体のガルガンチュアは、幼体が備えていた電力吸収能力をさらに発達させており、直接接触せずとも遠距離から乗り物の電力を吸収することができる。このため、攻撃を受けていなくても、本種の付近に留まるだけで電力を失う危険がある。
ガルガンチュアは遊泳中、周期的に咆哮する。時折放たれる短い咆哮は強力な衝撃波を伴い、プレイヤーを含む周囲の生物や乗り物を大きく弾き飛ばす。至近距離で直撃した場合には、シーモスやサイクロプス、そして他の大型生物にさえ損傷を与えるほどの威力を持つ。
ガルガンチュアは、プレイヤーがクレーター内部へ戻った後もすぐには追跡を中断しない。クレーター外縁部に留まっている限り、噛みつきや電力吸収の危険にさらされ続けるため、速やかにその場を離れることが推奨される。
When the player enters the Void, the Gargantuan Leviathan lets out a rumbling roar before slowly rising from the pitch-black abyss and revealing itself.
Ghost Leviathans, which would normally pursue intruders relentlessly in the Void, lose all aggression when the Gargantuan appears, becoming little more than aimless wanderers.
Once it emerges, the Gargantuan leisurely patrols the Void, pursuing and attacking other leviathans, including Ghost Leviathans. It seizes Ghost Leviathans in its enormous jaws and swallows them whole. Other leviathan-class creatures are bitten and killed in a single strike.
The player is also a potential target. However, observations indicate that the player is far less likely to be attacked while swimming unprotected than while piloting a vehicle such as a Cyclops or Seamoth.
The adult possesses a more advanced version of the energy-draining ability found in juveniles, allowing it to drain power from vehicles at a distance without making physical contact. Merely remaining nearby therefore poses a risk of losing power, even without being directly attacked.
The Gargantuan roars periodically as it swims. Some of its shorter roars generate powerful shock waves that hurl nearby creatures, vehicles, and the player a considerable distance. At close range, these blasts are strong enough to damage even Seamoths, Cyclops submarines, and other large organisms.
The Gargantuan does not immediately give up pursuit when the player returns to the Crater. As long as the player remains near the Crater’s edge, the threat of bites and energy drain persists; leaving the area promptly is advised.

乗り物に対する噛みつき攻撃は、物理的な損傷を与えるだけでなく、大量の電力を吸収し、回避や防衛機能の使用を困難にする。シーモスは一撃で粉砕され、サイクロプスも耐久値の8割を超える甚大な損傷を受けると同時に、電力の約5割を奪い取られる。シールド発生装置によって船体への損傷は防げるものの、電力の吸収までは阻止できない。そのため、ガルガンチュアによる電力吸収とシールド発生装置自体の電力消費が重なり、残存電力が2割程度にまで低下する場合がある。
また、ガルガンチュアの顎に船体を拘束された場合、その巨体によって一瞬で数百mもの深度まで引きずり込まれる危険がある。噛みつきによる致命的な損傷を免れたとしても、耐圧深度の限界を超えることで船体が崩壊するおそれがある。
プローンスーツは比較的小型の乗り物であるにもかかわらず、攻撃による耐久値の減少と電力の喪失をそれぞれ3割程度に抑えることができる。ただし、そもそも足場の存在しないデッドゾーンにプローンスーツで侵入することは、海底へ向かって落下し続け、耐圧深度を超過する危険があるため推奨されない。
先述の衝撃波を伴う咆哮も、極めて危険な攻撃である。衝撃波はプレイヤーと乗り物の双方に作用し、数十mもの距離を弾き飛ばすことがある。また、至近距離では衝撃波そのものによってダメージを受けるため、直接噛みつかれなくとも深刻な被害につながる。
なお、咆哮による衝撃波は基地の外壁にも壊滅的な損傷を与え、無数の浸水箇所を発生させる。ガルガンチュアはプレイヤーが基地内に退避しても追跡を中断しないため、デッドゾーンの外縁部付近に基地を建設することは推奨されない。
一方で、衝撃波を伴う咆哮と同じ音が聞こえても衝撃波が発生しない場合がある。これはサイクロプスに対する拘束攻撃の予兆であり、艦内AIが以下の警告を発するため、即座にシールド発生装置の展開を準備すること。

本種に対抗できる手段は極めて限定されている。先述の通り、サイクロプスのシールド発生装置は噛みつきによる船体への損傷を無効化できる。また、幼体に有効であったシーモス・イオンエネルギー周囲防御システムは成体に対しても効果を発揮し、攻撃を中断させることができる。
一方、幼体と同じくステイシスライフルによる拘束効果は無効である。リパルションキャノンは成体に対しても効果を発揮するとみられるが、生身でその有効射程内まで接近すること自体が極めて危険であり、実用的な対抗手段とは言い難い。
頂点クラスのリヴァイアサンである本種との遭遇は、乗り物の喪失やプレイヤーの死に直結しかねない。本種の存在が確認された以上、クレーター周辺の生態学的デッドゾーンは、ガルガンチュア以外の生命の存在を許さない、文字どおりの死の領域と化す。進入は賢明ではない。
Its overwhelming size makes even the slightest movement potentially fatal, regardless of whether it is acting aggressively. Its body is so vast and massive that it resembles part of the terrain itself; mere contact can easily overturn a Cyclops and send it flying hundreds of meters in an instant.
Its bites inflict not only physical damage but also drain enormous amounts of energy, making evasive maneuvers and defensive systems difficult to use. A Seamoth is crushed in a single hit, while a Cyclops may lose over 80% of its hull integrity and nearly half of its power at once. The Cyclops Shield Generator can prevent hull damage, but it cannot stop the energy drain. Combined with the shield’s own power consumption, this can leave the submarine with only around 20% of its energy remaining.
If the Gargantuan seizes a submarine in its jaws, its sheer size can drag the vessel hundreds of meters deeper in an instant. Even if the vessel survives the bite itself, exceeding its maximum operating depth may cause its hull to collapse.
Despite its relatively small size, the PRAWN Suit can limit the loss of hull integrity and power from an attack to approximately 30% each. However, entering the bottomless Void in a PRAWN Suit is not recommended: without a place to land, it risks falling continuously until it exceeds its maximum depth rating.
The shock-wave roars described above are also extremely dangerous. They affect both the player and vehicles, sometimes flinging them dozens of meters away. At close range, the shock wave itself inflicts damage, potentially causing severe harm without any direct bite.
These roars can also cause devastating damage to seabase walls, opening countless breaches and flooding compartments. Because the Gargantuan continues pursuing the player even after they retreat inside a base, building near the edge of the Void is not recommended.
Occasionally, a roar sounds identical to one that produces a shock wave, yet no shock wave occurs. This signals an impending grab attack against the Cyclops. The submarine’s onboard AI issues the following warning, so prepare to activate the Shield Generator immediately.

There are very few ways to defend against this creature. As noted above, the Cyclops Shield Generator can negate hull damage from a bite. The Seamoth Ion Perimeter Defense System, which is effective against juveniles, also works against adults and can interrupt an attack.
As with juveniles, the Stasis Rifle cannot immobilize it. The Repulsion Cannon may also work on adults, but getting close enough to use it while outside a vehicle is extraordinarily dangerous, making it impractical as a countermeasure.
An encounter with this apex-class leviathan can easily result in the loss of a vehicle or the player’s death. With its presence confirmed, the Ecological Dead Zone surrounding the Crater becomes a literal realm of death, permitting no life but the Gargantuan itself. Entry is ill-advised.

先述の通り、本種はロストリバーのボーンフィールドに存在する巨大化石（Gargantuan Fossil）の、生存時の姿を再現したものとされている。標準ゲームのデータバンクでは、この化石の全長は約1,200mと推定されているが、本種はその約4.5倍ものスケールで再現されている。
- 注意すべき点として、「ガルガンチュア・リヴァイアサン」という名称やその外観は、MOD開発チームによる独自の解釈に基づくものであり、Unknown Worlds Entertainmentによる公式設定ではない。標準ゲームの化石から確認できる外見上の特徴は、ウナギのような細長い体型、爬虫類を思わせる顎、3対計6個の眼などに限られる。結晶状の透明な鱗や、頭部を取り囲む触手状の構造などは、いずれもMOD独自のコンセプトアートに基づくデザインである。
- なお、開発初期には「Imperator Leviathan」という名称も候補として挙げられていた。名称を巡っては長期間にわたり議論が重ねられ、最終的には「Gargantuan Fossil」に由来する、現在の「Gargantuan Leviathan」という名称が採用された。

開発期間中、本種の外見やサイズは幾度も変更されてきたことが分かっている。

開発初期（2020年～2021年1月頃）の段階では、現在のような透明な皮膚を持たず、全身が漆黒の皮膚に覆われ、その表面には多数の赤い生物発光器官が備わっていた。その外観は、『Subnautica: Below Zero』に登場するシャドウ・リヴァイアサンを想起させるものであった。
一方、眼の色は現在とは大きく異なり、青白い色彩を持っていた。現在のような美麗で精巧なテクスチャこそ備わっていなかったが、漆黒の巨体から青白い瞳がのぞく姿は、現在の姿以上に恐怖感を呼び起こすものであったとも言える。
また、3対計6つの眼や鼻先に垂れ下がった発光器官、頭部を取り囲むように備わった触手など、基本的なデザインはこの時点ですでに完成していたことが分かる。 -
2021年4月頃には、現在とほぼ変わらない外観に変更されていたことが複数の実況動画から確認できる。この時点での明確な違いは、瞳の色が黄色であったこと程度である。眼の色は比較的近年の2024年前半まで黄色であったことが確認されており、おそらくその名残として、データバンクのイラストでも黄色い瞳で描かれている。
これらのことから、完成版に見られる『指輪物語』の冥王サウロンを想起させる、燃えるようなオレンジ色の瞳は、比較的最近になって採用されたデザインであると考えられる。 - 全長についても、開発初期には2,000mに設定されていたことが、古いデータバンクの記述から確認できる。本MODの翻訳ファイルには、本種の全長について「5,000メートル、すなわち3キロメートルに達する」という矛盾した記述が存在するが、これは開発中にサイズ設定が変更された際の修正漏れである可能性がある。

As noted above, this creature is believed to represent the living form of the Gargantuan Fossil found in the Bone Fields of the Lost River. The fossil’s total length has been estimated at around 1,200 m based on information from the base game, while this MOD recreates the creature at roughly 4.5 times that scale.
- It is important to note that both the name “Gargantuan Leviathan” and its appearance are interpretations created by the MOD development team, not official lore established by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. The fossil in the base game provides evidence of only a few external features, such as an elongated, eel-like body, reptilian-looking jaws, and three pairs of eyes (six in total). Its crystalline, transparent scales and the tentacle-like structures surrounding its head are original designs based on the MOD’s concept art.
- During early development, “Imperator Leviathan” was also considered as a possible name. After lengthy discussions, the team settled on “Gargantuan Leviathan,” taking inspiration from the name “Gargantuan Fossil.”

In early development (around 2020 to January 2021), the creature lacked its present-day transparent skin. Instead, its entire body was covered in jet-black skin studded with numerous red bioluminescent organs, giving it an appearance reminiscent of the Shadow Leviathan from Subnautica: Below Zero.
Its eyes, however, were a pale bluish-white rather than their present color. Although the model lacked the beautiful, intricate textures of the current version, its pale eyes staring out from a pitch-black body could arguably have made it even more frightening.
Fundamental design elements—including three pairs of eyes, dangling bioluminescent organs on the snout, and tentacles surrounding the head—were already established at this stage. -
Multiple gameplay videos show that by approximately April 2021, the model had already acquired an appearance nearly identical to the current one. The most obvious difference was its yellow eyes. They remained yellow until at least the first half of 2024, and the databank illustration likely retains that color as a remnant of the earlier design.
This suggests that the fiery orange eyes of the completed version, reminiscent of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, are a relatively recent design change. - Its length also changed: an older databank entry indicates that it was originally set at 2,000 m. The MOD’s localization files contain the contradictory description “5,000 meters, or three kilometers.” This may be an oversight left behind when the creature’s size was revised during development.

In earlier versions, a unique phenomenon was observed in which an adult Gargantuan Leviathan would cease all hostile behavior and remain motionless upon encountering a baby. However, according to the development team, this behavior was never intended to be included in the demo and has since been removed from the current version.
- Another phenomenon was also observed when the player entered the Void while keeping a baby in an aquarium inside their seabase: an adult would suddenly appear near the base. The gallery images showing an adult appearing near the Floating Island were captured during this event.
- Some have pointed out that it seems unrealistic for a creature of such immense size to relentlessly pursue and attack the player, who is far too small to constitute worthwhile prey. The databank states that the Gargantuan can detect intelligent organisms and will pursue them regardless of size, a detail that may have been introduced in response to this criticism.

Many aspects of the creature’s physiology remain unknown, but certain in-game scenes suggest that it possesses abilities resembling those of other creatures in the base game.
- The scene in which it causes the Neptune rocket to crash suggests that it may be capable of emitting an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), similar to the one used by Crabsquids, to disable electronic equipment.
- At the end of its databank entry, the PDA’s warning appears to be overwritten by a message from the Gargantuan itself. During the player’s first encounter with the creature, another message interrupts the PDA’s warning, seemingly addressing the player directly. These scenes suggest that it may be able to interfere with the player’s perception, like a Mesmer, or remotely tamper with electronic records and communications.
